Shout-out to SLUDGED PLANET for the youtube upload!!!  Rather than type something up, I'm just gonna copy and paste what Doomed Wolf has to say about it on the youtube page...

Is that just a rehearsal Demo ?!
if yes whats your upcoming album gonna sound like?
listening to Illryth notes many questions come to life, but one thing is certain: Doom scene is flourishing. Such amazing bands around, such powerful vibes. Illryth is one of these occasions. A top grade long-haired gang of 4 coming from Portland Oregon. Slow tunes crawling under your skin in a very Eyehategod-esque trip. Illryth its 104% authentic and legit. but we are so glad their demo recording even as a debut can be placed worthily on a wooden shelf next to very famous bands as the aformentioned.

PS. We are so amuzed when vocals sound like otherwordly audio effects. Bravo Paul.

Some Sludge Releases From 2018 That Impressed Me

This was by far the best year for sludge music I've seen in awhile.  Never heard so many solid releases in the genre from so many different places!!!   I think sludge might be developing into something with a worldwide scene of its own, rather than merely being considered a "subset" of doom metal, with a strong presence in NOLA and a handful of bands in other places.  Even my home state of Ohio (and the city of Cincinnati, where I live) has exploded with good sludge bands in recent years.  In Cincinnati, for a long time, we used to only have BENEATH OBLIVION .  But GAPING MAW and FLESH MOTHER emerged a few years ago and both have grown in their sound considerably... (this is the default image for a video of part of their set at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, NY in 2017 - it was shot by Max Volume Silence ) FLESH MOTHER released an incredible   two-song EP two years ago and last year, put out an impressive full-length  that was mastered by ...

NEWS ROUND-UP (GAPING MAW RIP, WOORMS and HORSEHUNTER 2019 Releases)...

GAPING MAW from Cincinnati has broken up.  I talked to one or two of the guys about it.  Sad to see that happen, but hopefully good will come of it.  If you haven't heard them yet, go to bandcamp and pick up their swan song, The Big Fuck-Over .  Physical copies are $5, downloads are name-your-price. The Big Fuck-Over by Gaping Maw WOORMS (from Baton Rouge, Louisiana) released a sick album called Slaked this year on Sludgelord Records.  It's on Spotify , Bandcamp , etc.  I strongly recommend it.  Definitely a top five or top ten release for the year.  Grab a copy on splattered vinyl before they're gone!!!! Australia's HORSEHUNTER put out their long-awaited sophomore effort, a self-titled full-length on Magnetic Eye.  It's on a variety of formats.  You can hear it in all of the usual places... Spotify , Bandcamp  (which is also where you can buy it), etc.

NEW NEGATIVE REACTION ALBUM IS COMING OUT SOON, ALBUM TITLE REVEALED!!!!

(latest shirt design, © By Robin) NEGATIVE REACTION's first album in like... a decade(?!) is just about finished - right now it's in the mastering stage at Steer Run Studios, which is Ken-E-Bones' recording studio at his compound in West Virginia (he relocated there from Long Island!!!!).  Speaking as one of the few people to have heard a track from it, I can tell you that it's going to be good ...  I had the privilege of seeing them last summer, where Ken-E-Bones, as he put it, "channeled his inner Randy Rhodes".  That's not just an opinion he and myself share, but his band and a pioneer of the sludge community who witnessed it live.  Get ready to be shocked by these solos.  At this point, I think it's safe to say that his guitar-playing is superior to Matt Pike, Wino, and even Dave Chandler.  So be sure to check it out when it drops! Btw here's the official statement the band released about it last month: Negative Reaction February 29 a...
