Take As Needed For Pain

Something that I've been struggling with since I was a child is severe stomach pain every morning that pretty much wipes me out for an hour or two, sometimes longer.  Full-body aches, cramping, light-headedness, nausea, dizziness... my face looks completely flushed during it.  Now in my late thirties, I've gotten used to the fact that it's just a normal part of my everyday life.  I've looked around for something to distract myself with when I'm going through it, but it wasn't until earlier this year that i finally did.  What was it?  This little ditty...

Sludge music, the marriage of hardcore punk and doom metal, was pioneered in the early nineties by such bands as NEGATIVE REACTION (Long Island, NY, now Central West Virginia), EYEHATEGOD (New Orleans), and GRIEF (Massachusetts).  While the former was just as influential as the other two and started earlier than both, they never received much attention.  Most people also don't know that they're responsible for the genre's title, which was coined by a review in Maximum Rock'n Roll, who completely trashed them and said that it was "like listening to sludge".  NEGATIVE REACTION decided to take that and run with it, turning it into a badge of honor.

Due to the influence of early New York hardcore punk bands on their sound, NEGATIVE REACTION could best be described as AGNOSTIC FRONT meets the MELVINS.  But their sound isn't limited to that - their influences also include BLACK SABBATH on Vol. 4, BIOHAZARD's demo (which is basically slowed-down NYHC), WINTER (NY), HAWKWIND, THE CRUMBSUCKERS.  Lyrically, the biggest influences are Star Wars, science fiction, depression, and did I mention Star Wars?  I've never met a bigger Star Wars fan than founder Ken-E-Bones (lead vocalist, guitar, and only founding member still in the band), which probably explains why he's covered in Star Wars tattoos.  Something else that you may find surprising is the fact that they don't smoke weed.  Ken-E-Bones has never had an interest in it and it actually came as a surprise to him when he found out that a lot of people who smoke left-handed cigarettes are fans.  He's not straightedge, by any means, but marijuana is just not something he's ever been into.  Go figure!!!

Long story short, NEGATIVE REACTION is my favorite band in the genre and my go-to for stomach pain relief.  Check out their bandcamp page for more, including this incredibly sick song...

Some Sludge Releases From 2018 That Impressed Me

This was by far the best year for sludge music I've seen in awhile.  Never heard so many solid releases in the genre from so many different places!!!   I think sludge might be developing into something with a worldwide scene of its own, rather than merely being considered a "subset" of doom metal, with a strong presence in NOLA and a handful of bands in other places.  Even my home state of Ohio (and the city of Cincinnati, where I live) has exploded with good sludge bands in recent years.  In Cincinnati, for a long time, we used to only have BENEATH OBLIVION .  But GAPING MAW and FLESH MOTHER emerged a few years ago and both have grown in their sound considerably... (this is the default image for a video of part of their set at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, NY in 2017 - it was shot by Max Volume Silence ) FLESH MOTHER released an incredible   two-song EP two years ago and last year, put out an impressive full-length  that was mastered by ...

NEWS ROUND-UP (GAPING MAW RIP, WOORMS and HORSEHUNTER 2019 Releases)...

GAPING MAW from Cincinnati has broken up.  I talked to one or two of the guys about it.  Sad to see that happen, but hopefully good will come of it.  If you haven't heard them yet, go to bandcamp and pick up their swan song, The Big Fuck-Over .  Physical copies are $5, downloads are name-your-price. The Big Fuck-Over by Gaping Maw WOORMS (from Baton Rouge, Louisiana) released a sick album called Slaked this year on Sludgelord Records.  It's on Spotify , Bandcamp , etc.  I strongly recommend it.  Definitely a top five or top ten release for the year.  Grab a copy on splattered vinyl before they're gone!!!! Australia's HORSEHUNTER put out their long-awaited sophomore effort, a self-titled full-length on Magnetic Eye.  It's on a variety of formats.  You can hear it in all of the usual places... Spotify , Bandcamp  (which is also where you can buy it), etc.

NEW NEGATIVE REACTION ALBUM IS COMING OUT SOON, ALBUM TITLE REVEALED!!!!

(latest shirt design, © By Robin) NEGATIVE REACTION's first album in like... a decade(?!) is just about finished - right now it's in the mastering stage at Steer Run Studios, which is Ken-E-Bones' recording studio at his compound in West Virginia (he relocated there from Long Island!!!!).  Speaking as one of the few people to have heard a track from it, I can tell you that it's going to be good ...  I had the privilege of seeing them last summer, where Ken-E-Bones, as he put it, "channeled his inner Randy Rhodes".  That's not just an opinion he and myself share, but his band and a pioneer of the sludge community who witnessed it live.  Get ready to be shocked by these solos.  At this point, I think it's safe to say that his guitar-playing is superior to Matt Pike, Wino, and even Dave Chandler.  So be sure to check it out when it drops! Btw here's the official statement the band released about it last month: Negative Reaction February 29 a...
